Last year, the Sharon Timlin Memorial Race became a certified “green” race by taking the Athletes for a Fit Planet Pledge of Sustainability and implementing 18 green initiatives as part of its commitment to become an eco-friendly event. This year, we pledge to continue this tradition of sustainability, making earth-friendly choices while minimizing the event’s carbon footprint. Here is what we are doing this year:
- Bamboo Tees – We loved the 100% certified organic bamboo T-shirts supplied by Good Gear last year, so we are bringing them back in bold new colors.
- No More Goodie Bags – You didn’t miss the paper coupons and plastic goodie bags last year, so we’ll continue the tradition of an online goodie bag full of great coupons and offers from our sponsors.
- No More Trinkets – As an eco-conscious event, we are doing away with the trinkets and tchotchkes that end up in your trash bin.
- Recycled Arts & Crafts – Instead, our young participants will find green arts and craft activities that capture the spirit of the day and keep this a fun and engaging event.
- Eco-friendly Portable Toilets – Dave’s Septic will provide eco-friendly toilets which use gentle, non-toxic chemicals and toilet paper made from 100% recycled materials.
Here's how you can help:
- Cycle to the Race – Every mile you drive produces about a pound of CO2. Eliminate parking hassles by riding your bike and using our Bike Valet service. A fenced-in bike corral with bike valets will keep your bicycle safe while you attend the event.
- Share a Ride - Save gas and reduce your carbon footprint by carpooling. Don’t have a friend to drive with? No problem, find a ride and make new friends through the Sharon Timlin Memorial 5K Race to Cure ALS PickupPal site, just for runners and their friends and families.
- Help us Recycle & Compost – Last year, over 90% of the food waste was composted and nearly all plastic and paper waste was recycled by E.L. Harvey, thanks to conscientious participants who took a moment to read the signs and put their trash in the right receptacle and dedicated greenies who literally rolled up their sleeves and sorted through the trash. This year, we encourage all participants to follow signs and use the recycling and compost bins at the event. Why not continue the practice in your home, school and workplace and minimize your environmental footprint?
- Recycle Old Shoes – With your help, last year we sent several boxes of shoes to Africa through our partner, the Sustainable World Fund. So, clean out your shoe closet again. We will collect all types of shoes except winter boots. Please return to this page for updates on collection sites as we get closer to the race.
